I'm sure everyone who worked on this has a different memory, but Jim Steinman said in an interview that Jimmy Iovine, the music supervisor, insisted throughout production that they'd have the rights to the Springsteen song because he was tight with Bruce's manager, and they filmed an ending with that music, then in the final moments Iovine couldn't land it. He needed Steinman to come up with a final song, then told the executives that Steinman took eight months to finish and that's why they had to rent the Wiltern theater and reshoot... in reality, Steinman wrote that masterpiece in two days. Two other interesting things he mentions is that apparently Spielberg was on set all the time because he wanted to watch Hill direct the action, and that the city in Streets of Fire is supposed to be an alternate reality version of Chicago. Thanks for making this, Streets of Fire is one of my favorite movies as well!

Not gonna lie, I thought it was going to cut to you at Eurovision in Sweden for a hot second. I've definitely been intrigued by Megalopolis, but your reviews completely sold me on checking out Emilia Perez after it hits Netflix.

I always thought the prevailing sentiment was that "Jaws" was a *better* film for showing the shark less, not that it was a masterpiece *only because* the shark had to be shown less. Is Patrick maybe setting up a bit of a straw man argument here?

Fun fact - A.R. Rahman is credited as composer on the bombed Lord of the Rings musical. Though the musical failed, the music is unimpeachably great. I know I’m late to the party, but I did a hard double take when I heard the name. Check out the LOTR cast recording if you haven’t before.

His acting reflects the gritted western films of old. Johny wayne and Bronson types. It fits what its supposed to thematically for what his character represents.

I went to school with a man who bought our local independent movie theater. Now that Megalopolis has a distributor, I asked that he show Megalopolis because I've wanted to see it since I heard it was being made.

I am glad I to not live in a country where I need to read subtitles because the movie is in english or whatever. I think this isn't about France being difficult, this is about France providing a french dub so the vast majority of us can really enjoy the movie, and you have a few theatres that let you see the VO (original version).

Thinking about Coppola's ambitions to change Hollywood movie making with American Zoetrope, I'm reminded that George Lucas actually achieved many of Coppola's goals with Lucasfilm, just maybe not in the way Coppola would have.

Hey Patrick. I only recently found out about Coppola's weird connection to Victor Salva, and it's kinda soured my opinion of him. There are plenty of artists who I try to separate from their art, but it's harder when "20 Year long passion project from legend of cinema, that digs deep into his bonkers mind" is supposed to be part of the appeal. Any thoughts?

Spaniard here, commenting just for possible future convenience: in most of Western Europe (which has a fairly well-established dubbing industry) dubbed films are a default, you have to specifically ask for a subtitled screening.

That's so weird that they didn't specify dub vs sub. I recall when I was in France in 2010 and went to see the premiere of "Inception" they definitely included VF next to dubbed listings (Version Francaise). Apparently now you have to look for "VOST" next to the listing, which stands for “version originale sous titrée” (original version with subtitles). Even still, this doesn't help for English movies with some foreign dialogue (I couldn't understand the Japanese lines from Watanabe in "Inception").

I don't like when people call half (or more) of his audience idiots. YT viewers are male and identify as libertarians and Republicans. And even if they disagree with you, they watch you in good faith, because right-wing men usually don't care about your politics.

When released, this movie was a flop in USA, but a huge hit in Japan where it ended up heavily influencing anime studios in the 80s (look up Konya wa Hurricane, an intro song to Bubblegum Crisis) and video game industry (the kidnapping scene in the movie is referenced at the start of Double Dragon). I watched this cocaine fueled beauty a few months ago and totally understand why it ended up being a big hit in Japan, despite failing in USA.

I’m just imagining an underpaid Cinemark, AMC, or Cineplex employee having to be the one to go ask Adam Driver a question in this screening of Megalopolis, and then go plunge a toilet after.

The most interesting thing about Kevin Smith is his friendship with Melissa Benoist (possibly, the most interesting thing about her as well).

A lot of french don't speak english, and don't like to "work" to read subtitles and understand the movie. (Cinema is to cool of, family event, etc) and we have the best voice over in the world for that reason (yes, i know, french chauvinism maybe)

In France movies are shown in English with the dub it's called VF ( version française). For the original language and subs it's called VOST (Version original sous titré).

If you come to major cities in France, you'll get an original+subtitle screening, but on a small city such as Cannes, not enough people understand English for cinema to actually bother most of time...

@patrickwillems Why dub films in other languages? Because Cinema is a popular medium, when you experience something in your own language you have a deep connection to it. Secondly, it is also a political statement, because the poorer you are, the less chance you have of speaking English or any other language. Also, French is a strong language share by 312million speakers.. Swedish, Dutch, Islandic or Danish have smaller population (few millions) I imagine they would like to have content in their language but economic issue limited the translation. Finally, cinema is a cross-generational experience: going to the cinema with your children and their grandparents makes everyone equal. They are all experiencing the same thing. PS- Also dubbing is an art and a big part of the cinema industry France, Japan and other country : we keep the same voice for the full carrier of an actor : the voice of Morgan Freeman or Jim Carrey are very well known in French. I'm a bit disappointed by this stereotypical ethnocentrism! ... I expected better from you. 🥲 It is sad to see you Leaving a Cinema 15min after the start of a film because you cannot handle another language and go with the flow
